Editorial Publishing Product Concept for News Editors

Editorial Publishing Product Concept for News Editors

Tasked to reimagine the way news editors at LinkedIn collect information, compose articles, and publish original editorial content on LinkedIn, I designed a web-based editorial publishing product experience concept, based on learnings from extensive research and interviews.

Meticulous Research & Experience Mapping

The first step was to identify all tasks news editors need to perform on a daily basis, what tools they had been using to perform the tasks, and what can be improved in the tools.

After a series of user research and interviews, I identified 6 main tasks, how they can be improved, and what UI functionalities the editors will need to have a better publishing experience.

The research results were then translated into an experience map (below) in a way that anyone can easily imagine a functional product.

Comprehensive Learning Synthesis & Product Mapping

The next step was to synthesize all the learnings and imagine a detailed product experience via mapping exercises.

The finalized map (below) portrays global and stand-alone functionalities, different levels of pages, content creation and distribution flows, and connections between all different parts of the imagined product.

High-Fidelity Wireframing

Based on the finalized product map, wireframes (below) were put together guide future visual design work.

The experience highlighted in the wireframe work is email communications experience (below), which was prioritized based on the editors' needs.

Detailed In-App and Push Notification Strategy

Another important functionality the editors were missing and wished to have was an easy-to-use, error-free notification creator that can inform LinkedIn users about newly published original content.

The same research and experience mapping approach was used to deliver a comprehensive UX thinking in solving the problem.

The finalized experience map (below) was to primarily have engineerings and product mangers understand the full notification creation and distribution flow from composing content and targeting audience to delivering the notifications and collecting feedback.

The color dots are applied to each step to indicate which current functionality can be retained, what functionality can be newly created, and what is being explored by engineers at the moment.

Adding Value in Human-Created Original Content

The initiative behind creating tools and products for news editors at LinkedIn was temporarily paused at the end of 2017. However, the research, thinking, mapping, and wireframing work that was delivered to the editorial team at LinkedIn helped emphasize the importance of original content creation and what can be done to further help editors and content creators at LinkedIn.
